Define the Problem Statement (Understand) is the first stage of the impact thesis methodology. It defines the problem statement, which states what issues the investment(s) will work to address for the target customers. The target customers are individuals experiencing issues that result in negative outcomes or impact. This component can also be thought of as the "but for" or the "status quo" test — what negative outcomes or impact the target customers would experience without the impact investment.
